    Tonight, we kick off our March yoga challenge on Instagram by posting instructions for the first pose.  The theme this month is “Dream Big”.  We are gearing up for the launch of our new clothing line with Gaiam in April, and honestly, it wouldn’t be happening if we didn’t start with a dream.  DreamBigWithTFM

    We want you to DREAM BIG, too, and develop a yoga practice that you love.  The goal of the challenge is to commit to your practice and to participate in some way, every day.  Can’t do all of the poses shown?  No problem.  Show us what you CAN do.  Modify. Get creative.  Have fun, and realize that you can be your own source of inspiration!

    4 Ways to Challenge & Enhance Your Practice with Yoga Blocks

    If you think yoga blocks are just for beginners that can’t touch their toes or for injured yoga practitioners that can’t sit between their heels in hero pose, think again. There are plenty of ways to get creative and use your blocks to deepen your practice in a challenging, fun way. Here are four suggestions:

    Twist & Tap
    Fire up your core in boat pose by holding a yoga block. Slowly twist from the lower belly to the right, tap the block on the ground to the right, and untwist your torso, coming back to center. Begin to twist to the left, tap the block on the ground to the left, and come back to center. Consider that to be one repetition. Keep your core engaged, your chest lifted, and avoid collapsing into your belly and rounding the back. The shins can remain parallel to the ground throughout the exercise, or you can extend your legs straight for a more intense variation. Work up to 12-15 repetitions.TwistAndTap

    Chest & Tricep Opener
    Place two yoga blocks on the ground, shoulder width apart. Kneel on the mat, and rest your elbows and triceps on the blocks. Keep your hips stacked over the knees, and begin to sink your chest toward the ground as you bring your hands together in prayer over your head. This pose is very much like puppy pose with the added benefit of a deep tricep stretch. Hold this pose for 5 to 10 breaths, sinking your chest lower with each breath.ChestTricepOpener

    Squeeze a Block in Inversions
    If your eyes glaze over when you hear your yoga teacher talking about internally rotating the thighs and hips while performing inversions, no need to worry. This exercise will solidify the concept in your mind, and you won’t forget anytime soon. By squeezing a yoga block between your feet as you slowly lift into an inversion, not only will you train your core muscles, but you will also automatically create a slight internal rotation in your legs that will help you stabilize and build strength. Go ahead and try this exercise with any inversion of your choice.HeadstandCollage

    Relaxing, Deep Backbend
    In my own personal practice, I’ve found this to be the single most effective stretch for the upper back and chest. If you are looking to deepen your backbend practice, it’s so important to stretch in various ways to help create an even backbend through your lower, middle and upper back. Place a block underneath your shoulder blades as you lie on the ground. If you tend to be very tight across the chest and back, start out by placing the block on shortest height. Breathe for 5-10 breaths before turning the block so that it’s resting in its next tallest orientation. Again, breathe for 5-10 breaths, and allow the chest and back to open up bit by bit. Finally, if your flexibility allows, turn the block to its highest orientation, and lie across the block for another 5-10 breaths. Try placing a second block under your head like a pillow for more support.UpperBackOpener

    3 Tips to Increase Your Productivity

    Some days, I feel like I work, move and hustle continuously, but when I finally get into bed at night and mentally review what I’ve accomplished, I have nothing to show for it. I know I’m not lazy, and I know I’ve been sitting at my desk working, so where did I lose all of my precious hours of productivity? Well, this is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I think I know the answer. My hours were lost to my iPhone.Productivity

    I don’t mean that I surf the web for hours or get caught up in video games. Not even close. I probably don’t even spend more than 10-15 minutes at a time on my phone, but I’ve found that even a 30-second break to respond to a text, to mindlessly scroll through photos, or to check for new e-mails is long enough to break my concentration. Once the concentration is broken, it’s a process to re-immerse myself into my work.

    Here’s a quick illustration of this point:

    As an experiment, I placed my phone, face up, right next to me on the table as I began to write this post. After 40 minutes, I assessed my productivity. I wrote ONE paragraph. FORTY minutes to write four sentences! Geez…Yes, I happen to be a slow writer, but I’m not that slow.

    The problem with having my iPhone next to me at all times is that it is a constant distraction—even after minimizing what I thought were the obvious distractions.

    Let’s take a look at my current efforts to minimize phone distractions:

    -My phone settings are configured so that all social media notifications are turned off.

    -My text message notifications are on, but they are completely silent as they flash across my phone screen.

    -Even my phone’s ringer is turned to silent mode and only buzzes for incoming calls.

    Despite this effort, my phone still affects my productivity.

    Here’s what happened during the 40 minutes that I was supposedly writing:

    -I received 21 text messages and read all of them as they arrived.

    -I responded to 4 of those messages.

    -I checked my e-mail once.

    -I checked my notification feed on Facebook once.

    Each item on the above list probably took less than two to three minutes to address, but the end effect was not just a loss of two to three minutes of productivity.

    The smart phone is such an amazing feat of technology, allowing me to travel and work and stay connected at all times, but it is a double-edged sword. This small device that acts as my phone, mini-computer, family photo album, public library, television, instant messaging service, etc, constantly calls for my attention and gives me the constant stream of information and stimulation that I crave. And of course, the more I give in, the more I crave additional information and stimulation. (Hence, the constant checking of the phone.)

    I know I can’t be alone in this experience, and I know I can’t be the only one that is fed up with disappointing days of low productivity.

    Here’s an idea: Let’s reclaim our days and be more effective with the time that we are given. This is my latest challenge to bring an increased sense of peace and mental clarity to my life. I hope you will join me! In an effort to limit distractions and maximize effectiveness and productivity, I will implement the following three changes in my life:

    Reduce Frequency of E-mail Sessions to Three Times Daily
    No more frequent e-mail checks through out the day. I am in the bad habit of turning to my inbox all day long—when I am bored, having writer’s block, waiting for a document to print, etc. Instead of continuing with this disruptive activity, I will set aside three specific times during the work day (no less than four hours apart) to check e-mail. While I respond to e-mail, I will focus on that task for no more than 30 minutes. At the end of 30 minutes, I will close my mail until the next allotted time.

    Disable All Notifications on Phone
    I will turn off ALL notifications on my phone— including text message notifications. Going forward, I will only check text messages during my planned breaks. The only interruption that will be allowed is the ring or vibration for incoming phone calls. I will not worry about urgent texts—there’s no such thing. If there is a true emergency, someone will pick up the phone and call me.

    Treat Social Media as a Hobby
    Think about your hobbies. Think about what they are and when you participate. No one pulls out a sewing machine to sew for ten minutes every hour. No one stops working to play tennis for ten minutes every hour. As a hobby, there is a special block of time set aside to enjoy it fully. To work well in my life, I think that social media needs to be compartmentalized, just like a hobby. I don’t want to whittle away at my potentially productive blocks of time with a few minutes of mindless scrolling every half hour. Instead, I will set aside two periods of time each day to connect with friends and family on my personal social media accounts. No more three-minute Facebook breaks that disrupt the work flow. I’m done with that. If social media is going to be a hobby, it’s going to be treated like a hobby.

    10 Reasons I Do Instagram Yoga Challenges

    Over the past year, Laura and I have been very active in the Instagram yoga community.  We’ve hosted some of the very first yoga challenges offered on Instagram, and we continue to remain active in hosting and participating in challenges today.

    Since our early days of posting very detailed step-by-step picture tutorials, we’ve watched thousands of people connect and grow a virtual Instagram yoga community just by attempting the GrasshopperPrepdaily pose of the day and posting a photo of their attempt to a designated hashtag.  What an overwhelmingly positive experience to watch Instagram yogis grow, inspire, and BE inspired!

    If you have not yet given a challenge a try, I suggest that you pick one and get involved today.  Here are my top reasons for participating each month.

    It Creates a Daily Habit
    A daily yoga challenge makes you commit to a daily practice.  Let’s be honest—it’s hard to commit to a daily hour-long yoga session.  We are all tired and busy, but, I assure you that it feels much less overwhelming if we believe that we just need to stretch and warm up for one yoga pose.  This is a great way to take baby steps toward a longer more meaningful daily practice.  Get in the habit of rolling out your mat daily by participating in a challenge.

    It’s Fun
    Everyone loves a good challenge.  I still remember the first time I saw a photo of an arm balance pose on Instagram.  It looked incredible.  How was it even possible to balance in that way?!!!  I was fascinated and excited to get on my mat and try.  Perfecting the pose was not the goal.  The goal was to try, and practice, grow and play.  As adults, we rarely play.  Practicing new yoga poses each day awakens our inner child, and it’s just downright FUN.

    It’s Free
    Do I have to say more?  It’s free.  Free instruction, free participation, free fun, and often, you can even score a free prize!  Not everyone has the money to take a yoga class in a studio.  By participating in an Instagram yoga challenge, you can get your yoga fix without shelling out the big bucks.

    SideCrowIt’s Inspiring
    It’s incredibly inspiring to look through a yoga challenge hashtag and see thousands of yogis from all walks of life doing the same pose.  These yogis are different ages, races, sizes and nationalities, but they have all come together to participate and grow in their practice.  Seeing a yogi that is twice your age is inspiring.  Seeing a parent and child together attempting a pose is inspiring.  Seeing yogis that are overcoming sickness and pain by using yoga as a healing tool is inspiring.  All of this inspiration will make you want to come back day after day and practice with the Instagram community.

    It Can Be Done from Home
    Some people don’t have the money to take a yoga class, and others don’t have the time to take a class.  As a mother of young children, it takes a village for me to be able to leave my house to do basic things—like shop for groceries or get a haircut.  Traveling to a yoga studio does not happen often, and it doesn’t happen without planning in advance for babysitters.  By getting involved with Instagram challenges, I can practice at home whenever it’s convenient—even if that means taking photos of poses at midnight.

    It Documents Your Journey
    For better or for worse, if you participate in a daily Instagram yoga challenge, you will have a visual record of each pose that you attempt.  In the beginning, seeing your poor form or lack of flexibility may be discouraging, but as time passes, you will be grateful for these photos.  It amazes me to look back at my old yoga photos and see how far I’ve come in my practice.  My posture, flexibility, strength and form have improved dramatically, and I am aware of the progress that I’ve made over weeks or months.

    It’s a Great Way to Meet Yoga Friends
    The Instagram yoga community is an amazingly supportive group.  Everyone is encouraging and supportive, and that is a great kind of environment to learn and grow in your practice.  When you join an Instagram yoga challenge, you get the feeling that you are a part of something greater than yourself.  As soon as you join a challenge, you are no longer alone.  You have joined a movement, and it feels amazing to get caught up in the positive energy and practice (virtually) alongside your new Instagram yogi friends.

    FlyingLizardIt Creates a Well-Rounded Practice
    We all have our strengths.  We all also have our weaknesses.  I’ve found that when I practice yoga on my own, I have a tendency to work on poses that come easily to me, and I avoid working on the poses that target my weaker/less flexible body parts.  The wonderful thing about Instagram yoga challenges is that the pose of the day forces you to work on body parts that you might otherwise completely avoid.  If the challenge pose is a backbend, you will work on backbends, even if you dislike them.  If the challenge pose is a deep hamstring stretch, you will spend time stretching the backs of your legs.  I’ve found this aspect of the challenges to be very beneficial.  Rather than focusing on just the poses that I enjoy, I also work diligently on the poses that I don’t enjoy so much.  By doing this, I’ve become much more well-rounded in my practice than I otherwise would be.

    It Exposes You to Different Types of Yoga
    I used to think that there was one type of yoga—the kind where you sit with your hands in prayer and maybe do a warrior 1 pose from time to time.  The idea of doing yoga used to bore me to tears.  I had no idea that yoga could be a challenging, sweat-inducing workout.  There is a type of yoga for everyone, and the world of Instagram yoga has opened my eyes to it all.  Who knew that yoga could include inversions like headstands and handstands or arm balances that tested your strength, balance and flexibility?  Take a look through all of the available challenges this month and you will see how much variety yoga has to offer.

    TreeEnjoy the Non-Physical Benefits of Yoga
    If you join an Instagram yoga challenge and you’ve never tried yoga before, you might start out just enjoying the physical benefits of the poses.  That’s definitely the experience I had.  I would stretch, strengthen, sweat, take a photo of the pose of the day, and move on with my life.  Over time, however, I’ve noticed that my body has loosened up to the point where my practice has truly become a moving meditation.  I can find peace in each pose, as the poses become more accessible.    I am now able to focus on the present moment as I’m living it, and THIS is an invaluable skill on and off the mat.
